Baños to Cuenca Ecuador: 5 Best Ways to Get There

The journey from Baños to Cuenca winds through some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Ecuador. The stretch from Alausí to Cuenca is especially scenic, with rolling green valleys and dramatic ridgelines.

It’s also one of those routes where the logistics shape the experience. The direct bus is the simplest option, but departure times are limited. So then the real question becomes: is it worth breaking up the Baños to Cuenca bus trip with a stop in Alausí or Riobamba?

I took the direct bus from Baños to Cuenca with friends who were short on time. And then made both stops when I was traveling solo on the way back. In this guide, I’ll share what to expect and whether those extra stops are worth it based on your interests.

1. Baños to Cuenca Direct Bus

The most popular way to get from Baños to Cuenca is the direct bus with Amazonas. But the downside is the limited schedule. When I traveled this route in April, departures were at 8:45 am and 10 pm. The Amazonas website also lists 2:30 pm and 7 pm, but those times are either seasonal or outdated.

I recommend buying your ticket in person a day or two in advance to make sure there’s space and to have a better choice of seats. The Baños to Cuenca direct bus takes about 8 hours, with a very short stop in Riobamba and a brief food and bathroom break just outside of Alausí.

Since the Baños bus station is centrally located (map), it’s easy to walk in and check the schedule. Or if you’re arriving by bus from Quito to Baños, it’s worth checking the times before you leave the station.

2. Stop in Alausí on the way to Cuenca from Baños

The Baños to Cuenca direct bus stops briefly in Alausí, but I think this town deserves more time. It’s one of the Pueblos Mágicos in Ecuador that is well worth staying a night or two.

Alausí Ecuador is also the base for the Devil’s Nose hike, a scenic trail that climbs above the old railway line and offers sweeping views of the canyon. It’s a great way to experience the dramatic landscape behind what is considered one of the most ambitious rail engineering feats in the world.

There’s no direct bus from Baños to Alausí, but you can get there by changing buses in Riobamba or Ambato. Both have frequent departures from Baños, and you might even consider stopping in both Alausí and Riobamba (see next) along the way. If you do decide to spend time in Alausí, check out this place to stay. The owner and vibes are awesome.

3. Bus Baños to Cuenca vía Riobamba

If standing near the closest point on Earth to the sun is on your list, consider a stop in Riobamba on your way from Baños to Cuenca. It’s the city to base yourself to hike up the Chimborazo volcano, which is exactly why I stopped here.

Riobamba is the oldest city in Ecuador which also intrigued me. The historic center is impressively well preserved, but very small. Otherwise the city has more of a commercial feel that I didn’t find appealing. That said, the distant views of Chimborazo were lovely, and staying at this fabulous hostel helped make the visit more enjoyable.

Buses from Baños to Riobamba run frequently throughout the day. From Riobamba, you can continue south to Alausí or Cuenca, depending on how much time you have.

4. Bus Baños to Cuenca vía Ambato

In my opinion, the only reason to take the bus from Baños to Cuenca through Ambato is if you want more flexibility with the departure times. You’ll find local buses to Ambato and connections from here to Cuenca run regularly, so it can make the logistics easier.

Ambato is surrounded by beautiful mountains, and I actually stayed here for a few days while visiting a friend. But for most travelers with limited time, it’s not really a tourist destination. There are just too many amazing places to visit in Ecuador that offer more to explore.

Fun story. After visiting the turquoise crater lake at Quilotoa, I hitched a ride with a group from Ambato. When I told them I’d visited their city, they looked surprised and said, “It’s kind of boring, huh?”

And I responded with, yeah that’s probably why my friend goes on mountain adventures nearly every weekend. We had a good laugh while I appreciated their honesty.
